Let me start this sharing by letting you into the deep diminutive mind of a young litlle Christian girl. This young Christian girl would say a prayer as such;

Dear Father, thank you for listening to my prayers. Today, my dad bought a huge bag of jelly beans for me! I remember I asked it from you a few weeks ago. Thank you. Now, I have more things on my ‘want’ list that only you can grant me. Since my birthday is coming up, I saw this new Barbie doll collection as I walked by a shop yesterday. The Barbie doll is dressed in a red dress with nice matching red shoes. I really like it. I hope you could tell my mum or my dad about it. Oh! Before I forgot, could I add another item on my list? I would like to have a Barbie dollhouse set which my best friend, Sherlyn, has. I would like to have it so I can bring it to her place and we can play it together. Father, thank you for listening to me and I love you. In Jesus most precious Name I pray, Amen.

That young girl could easily be anyone of us. That young girl could easily be me. Demanding yet straightforward. But one thing that caught my attention was that she demanded from the person who could give her anything in the world. She knew that God can give her anything she wants, all she needed to do was to ask.

God wants us to have a childlike mind. He wants us to take away our own pride of ‘I can achieve everything on my own accord’ and instill in us a mind that comes to Him with humility and full dependence. And that is why Jesus brought a child into this picture. In the Amplified Version Bible, childlikeness is defined as trusting, lowly, loving and forgiving. Wow! As I observe the prayer above, the young girl was really trusting God with her wants and humbling herself that only God can give her what she wants although she could ask her parents. She knew her everyday Santa Clause is God.

In life, we always have something in mind that we want and need. Come on guys! Let’s be honest, there are definitely more wants than needs. I can be the first to admit that. I have only a pair of legs, how many pairs of shoes do I need? (I get that a lot from people who don’t understand that my feet are precious and that they deserve to fit in more than a lovely pair of sandals. Haha.. I sense a bit of bitterness.) But the important things in life are not wants but needs . Shoes and PS3 games are big no nos in the impotant list. It’s joy, peace, love, hope and faith which are the essential things in life. And sadly, (I’m sorry, I have to burst the bubble, guys) we can’t buy nor demand them.

Have you guys heard about “Mail Order Bride” before? I was dumb folded when I heard we could order a bride. (Hmmm… maybe that would be good for Francis? Hope he doesn’t sees this). These women post their details in catalogues and men just select them for marriage. I wonder if these marriages last? I doubt it personally as money can’t really buy love. You cannot demand someone to love you. And it is proven to be true that the more you demand, the more the person draws away.

But there’s good news! There is a solution! We have our God. Yes, we can’t buy and demand important things but we can ask and depend on our God for them (Yup! So pray for a great spouse right now). Coming back to the little girl whose prayers are actually a list of her wants, she is really practicing what God wants us to do. All we need is to ASK! She made a decision to depend on God. And so can we. I am sure that as we humble ourselves and ask while waiting patiently with full hope and great expectancy, God will exceedingly provide our needs. He is after all a good God.

So let’s make a stand today. A stand of depending on our GREAT and MARVELLOUS GOD!
